CAROLINE McCARTHY

WORKS |  BIOGRAPHY

Born 1971, Dublin, Ireland, lives and works in London, United Kingdom

Caroline McCarthy has already attracted considerable attention for innovative exploration of situations and things generally so familiar they go unnoticed. Among the earliest works that brought her recognition was a video piece: Greetings (1996), in which a glimpse of the artist's head occasionally intrudes into stereotypical images of the Irish landscape. This piece was recently seen across the USA in Irish Art Now-From the Poetic to the Political, and is now in the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art. McCarthy exercises a keen interest in packaging and the way we are conditioned to expect what we get. In From the Testors Military Range, 2002, colorful detergent bottles painted gray, change our perception of the cartons as they take on the appearance of electronics. Similarly her Still Lifes made from wet colored toilet paper continue this investigation into consumerism, implying scatological undertones at the same time referencing art historical frameworks that critique the gallery context.
